St Mary's Church, Salehurst
Location: St Mary's Church, Salehurst, East Sussex
Theme: Life is eternal
Date: 2001
Project Manager: Anonymous donor
Situation & Aspect: Centre of the south aisle
Dimensions: 2 light window, each light 0.45m wide by 1.32m high
Brief:To create a design symbolising resurrection or re-birth, incorporating local landscape, inspired by Blake's Jerusalem, and a prayer by William Penn as quoted by Abraham Lincoln.
Description: The design is concerned with the power of life over death, through the example of Christ's love. This is symbolised by radiating light through a cross over a circle of refracted light as in a rainbow. The landscape and canopies depict hops to symbolise the living vine. The inscription reads: 'Life is eternal and love is immortal, and death is but a horizon and the horizon is but the limit of our sight.'
Materials & Techniques: All mouth-blown glass. The rainbow is partly etched 'flashed' glass, and plated (two different colours of glass sandwiched together).
The arms of the cross are painted lines with a long-haired 'duck' brush. It is also yellow stained. Towards the centre is an allusion of Jerusalem, painted in subtle tones. The landscape below consists of streaky glass painted and stained, with additional enamels in the hop fields.
