Sedlescombe Church
Location: Sedlescombe, East Sussex, St John the Baptist Parish Church
Theme: Millennium Window symbolizing St John the Baptist and Christ
Dates: 2006
Project Managers: Peggy Evendon
Situation & Aspect: Adjacent to the font, north facing.
Dimensions: Two-light window, Width 0.5m Height 2.0m, each main light .
Brief: To design and make a figurative window depicting John the Baptist and Christ, to complement existing windows. A challenge was to resolve traditional and modern tastes.
Description:The left light shows John the Baptist wearing camel hair and holds a bowl from which a column of water links to water at his feet. He is also surrounded by a blue watery element. There is a depiction of Sedlescombe village pump beneath. In the right hand light, Christ is shown in timeless rainment with hands held in blessing. He is surrounded by a fiery element. The flames symbolizing baptism by spirit. The entrance to the church is shown with an open door.
Materials & Techniques:The figure of St John consists of brown tinted glass, with glass paint and stain. Christ's rainment is 'flashed' pink and etched glass. (Flash is a thin layer of coloured glass on
a base of clear or differently coloured glass). The surrounding water and fiery elements are also flashed glass, blue and red respectively, etched and painted with attenuated lines and half tones. The original green tinted quarrels (diamond shaped glass) were re-used for the surround to link with other windows. A continuous line and yellow stain around the main motifs acts like a 'vermiculatum' (a classic mosaic method creating a halo effect).
