Situation & Aspect: Previously top light to shop entrance, north west facing. Now hanging panel to staircase, east facing.

Dimensions: Height 0.425m Width 0.91m

Brief: To make a panel for a shop selling American products.

Description: Combination of an American flag, Union Jack and Hastings coat of arms with sky and sea in the background. *The image relates to an area, previously fore-shore occupied by squatters in the nineteenth century, who proclaimed independence from the council's jurisdiction, when the authorities tried to evict them. The Crown then claimed the land and gave the squatters short term leases, at the end of which the land was transferred to the local council.

Materials & Techniques: French made red and blue "Flashed" glass; clear glass with a thin layer of colour which has been etched, some of which is plated; two layers sandwiched togther to acheive several colours in one shape as in the Union Jack. For the sky, German "Pot Metal" mouthblown glass. For the sea, American "Waterglass".
