Stained glass for churches often serve as a memorial or commemorative purpose while essentially being to the Glory of God. It may illuminate a biblical theme by imagery and symbolism. Stained glass can also support the spiritual life through abstract qualities of line shape and colour.

When designing for churches, Alan Wright is conscious that the needs of the of the clients have to be established, while also being aware of the orientation, quality of light, and other considerations, such as existing windows have to be taken into account; to be complimentary to these.
